Gathering for the Celebration of Hallowe'en

The clouds are gathering for the celebration of the lil ghosts and goblins to be out and about in your neighbourhood.  Be kind to the lil ones and keep a watchful eye out for them whilst they gather their treats and snacks.

Tweeking Tuesday

Tuesday has arrived and here we are.  Where did Monday go?  It passed us by in a swirl of wind and patchy sunshine.  Tuesday is here and with it the cool temperatures of late fall.

Tuesday is the day I had hoped to tweek some items on the blog, but the day had other plans, so it is off to work I go.  The tweeks will have to wait for another day.

I am finishing one pink flower mosaic so that I can begin another.  The grouting on this one has been complex and time consuming.  But it is coming along and hopefully by the weekend I can begin the other side of the project.  I have a few Fairy Protectors made two for Christmas gifts and one for us to keep at home.  I have a dragonfly idea for a piece of wood and another idea for a my good friend Cap'n Jack, I am collecting pieces of glass for him as it will be a large and complex mosaic.

Enjoy the sunshine,

Haunter of the Haunted House

Well it is October and the time to be a haunter has arrived.  Each Friday and Saturday in our town we have a haunted house at the fairgrounds.  Last night was my turn to be a volunteer haunter, and of course I recruited my Mom.  We pulled together some warm clothes and some makeup that I never use and we put it all on and voila!

My Mom was hilarious!  Saying things in a very high pitch voice like "we know you are coming, come on little children, we like little children" if I had not been sitting beside her I would not have believed it was my Mom making these sounds.

I am on board for next weekend and will dress differently and hopefully have Mom to come and haunt.

Happy Haunting

Frustration with technology

Yesterday I deleted the picture of my young oak sapling to replace it with the fall version, and now I am unable to upload a new version.  I will not give up quite so easily, so rest assured I am working on correcting the issue.

In the meantime I am busy with work and bringing in garden items for the long nap ahead of us.

October Camping Update

Well the camping pictures I uploaded yesterday, today I write about the adventure.  Oh my gosh, what beautiful weather!  The nights were cold the first 3 but then it warmed up considerably.  The first night was about 5' C and the second about 4'C, then they began to warm up and the last night the fifth it was 13'C, it was balmy!

The daytime temperatures in the forest were about 15'C, but once you went out into the sun and out of the shade of the trees it was as high as 26'C.

The trip began with me by myself, then the second day my Mom showed up for a visit completely unprepared to camp and ended up staying until Monday we everyone in the park was vacating.  Then along came my two young nieces, 3 and 5.  Along with them came warm blankets for my Mom, and she shared her tent with them and was much warmer with proper sleeping gear.  The first night she spent in my tent.  I shared blankets and sleeping strategies with her, but she was not sure about my ideas on the layering of blankets under her. Clarity was her gift of the next day, now she understands the importance of the bottom layers when you are in a tent in October.  It was funny.

I am the cook and it is always a fire when I camp.  This time I managed to roast a free range chicken complete with stuffing and gravy over an open fire.  Including sweet potatoes, squash, potatoes and roasted garlic.  It was yum!

We took the girls to the beach on Saturday late in the day, and they ended up in the lake.  They thought it was cold in the beginning but shook off the shivers and played in the water.  We saw a Monarch butterfly crash land onto the beach and I was concerned for it.  We checked her out but it appeared she was just exhausted and we kept an eye from a distance and sure enough about 20 minutes later off she flew and proceeded on her journey south.  The girls were quite excited to see that she was indeed okay.

Sunday was all about pumpkins and colouring contest.  We also went for a long walk the girls and I, and stopped off at the playground.  My youngest niece fell from a pretty good height off the climbing pole but she shook it off and is fine.  The park provided pumpkins for the campsites that registered and we were part of the group that participated.  The picture might be uploaded to the park website by now, but I have not checked.

Sunday night my nephew arrived.  The original plan was to have him there the entire time, but work intervened and he could not play hooky.  So, he was there on Sunday and we hung out and built up the fire, roasted marshmallows and began the tear down the next day.  Mom took the girls home and Bear and I came to my place we had dinner and put our feet up after the big event of emptying the car.  We watched some tube and and he headed home for classes the next day.

It was a great camping trip and I look forward to washing all my blankets and tent fly to prepare again for next camping season.

Camping in October

Well I am off to the campground after work today.  The car is packed and the groceries are next.  The weather looks spectacular!  Looking forward to spending time next to the fire reading a book and just enjoying the fresh air of the forest.

Company is expected on the Saturday possibly Friday.  It is with anticipation I wait for the visit of my nephew.  He is older now and spends time doing his things and our visits are not as frequent as they used to be but we still get together for quality visits.

I am attempting to roast a chicken this trip in a real roast pan, so we shall see how that goes.  The fixings for S'mores are all packed.  We have homemade stew, steaks, porkchops, and bacon as staples along with sweet potatoes, potatoes, onions and going to make campfire mac and cheese. Oh yum!

Well the preparations must continue. I bid you adieu.

The Tale of the Pumpkin Vine

The tale of the pumpkin vine begs to be told.  The vine you see was planted by a feathered friend in a perfect spot for lots of sun, a little bit of wind and lots of growing room.  So the tale you see has to be told due to the little bird who grew so much.  So you see the bird that planted the pumpkin seed or moved the pumpkin seed from where it was planted by the resident gardener.  The vine began slowly and quietly so as not to be really noticed to be in place where there is really no room for it to be viable.  But then you see the gardener went away.  Ten days later the vine had taken the sidewalk as its mate and the lawn on the way to the garden gate and decking too.  Oh my! said the gardener and her mate.  The gardener picked up the vine and ever so gently moved it over away from the main part of the lawn and garden.  The vine was happy and produced two young offspring in the form of little pumpkins.  Well the gardener and her mate were so surprised!  Did this mean at last they would have a Jack O'Lantern and then some pie?  Oh my!  So, this is the tale you will see about the little bird who had to have planted that seed.

Family, friends, drink and good food

We had dinner yesterday with long time family friends at their place and it was a nice get out and enjoy the company of long time friends that are like family.  We have known each other since I was three and two of the people at the dinner last night babysat me when I was a little gaffer.  It was nice to see them again.  We had a fantastic pork roast, squash, carrots with turnip, peas, french bread, applesauce, potatoes and apple pie and scratch pumpkin pie.

Today is last minute prepping for the upcoming camping trip.  I need to do a bakery run to get some hot dog buns, two loaves of bread and some treats for the fire.  Busy day I have a homecrafters meeting today as well.  We meet once a month on the first Monday to discuss all kinds of things crafty.

Enjoy the day

October

The calendar has shifted once again and brought with it the colours of fall and fantastic harvests.  The pumpkins are ripening in the yard, the wind has picked up a chilly friend and the sky is clear and bright at night.  Along with the changing leaves, harvesting, and preparation for a long winter nap the air is crisp as we change our seasons once again.

Saturday was spent doing preparation for the upcoming camping trip.  I made a hearty beef stew with potatoes, zucchini - green and yellow, sweet potatoe, carrots, onion, celery and beef.  All local of course and organic.  We had shish ka bobs for dinner and pumpkin custard for dessert.  We are off for dinner with friends today and along comes the scratch pumpkin pie.

The air is crisp the temperature is 4 and the house is alive with fresh air and a quietness of one awake and one still slumbering.  The fish are fed and the laundry is folded.  Today brings packing for camping, and organizing to load the car.  It might be a good day to fire up the wood stove in the garage whilst I organize camping gear.

Enjoy the day,
