October Camping Update

Well the camping pictures I uploaded yesterday, today I write about the adventure.  Oh my gosh, what beautiful weather!  The nights were cold the first 3 but then it warmed up considerably.  The first night was about 5' C and the second about 4'C, then they began to warm up and the last night the fifth it was 13'C, it was balmy!

The daytime temperatures in the forest were about 15'C, but once you went out into the sun and out of the shade of the trees it was as high as 26'C.

The trip began with me by myself, then the second day my Mom showed up for a visit completely unprepared to camp and ended up staying until Monday we everyone in the park was vacating.  Then along came my two young nieces, 3 and 5.  Along with them came warm blankets for my Mom, and she shared her tent with them and was much warmer with proper sleeping gear.  The first night she spent in my tent.  I shared blankets and sleeping strategies with her, but she was not sure about my ideas on the layering of blankets under her. Clarity was her gift of the next day, now she understands the importance of the bottom layers when you are in a tent in October.  It was funny.

I am the cook and it is always a fire when I camp.  This time I managed to roast a free range chicken complete with stuffing and gravy over an open fire.  Including sweet potatoes, squash, potatoes and roasted garlic.  It was yum!

We took the girls to the beach on Saturday late in the day, and they ended up in the lake.  They thought it was cold in the beginning but shook off the shivers and played in the water.  We saw a Monarch butterfly crash land onto the beach and I was concerned for it.  We checked her out but it appeared she was just exhausted and we kept an eye from a distance and sure enough about 20 minutes later off she flew and proceeded on her journey south.  The girls were quite excited to see that she was indeed okay.

Sunday was all about pumpkins and colouring contest.  We also went for a long walk the girls and I, and stopped off at the playground.  My youngest niece fell from a pretty good height off the climbing pole but she shook it off and is fine.  The park provided pumpkins for the campsites that registered and we were part of the group that participated.  The picture might be uploaded to the park website by now, but I have not checked.

Sunday night my nephew arrived.  The original plan was to have him there the entire time, but work intervened and he could not play hooky.  So, he was there on Sunday and we hung out and built up the fire, roasted marshmallows and began the tear down the next day.  Mom took the girls home and Bear and I came to my place we had dinner and put our feet up after the big event of emptying the car.  We watched some tube and and he headed home for classes the next day.

It was a great camping trip and I look forward to washing all my blankets and tent fly to prepare again for next camping season.
